# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

TENNESSEE DOCUMENTATION
Last edited: March 6, 2006

Public water-supply data for the calendar year 2000 were obtained from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Division of Water Supply (DWS). TDEC regulates public water-supply withdrawals and usage within Tennessee. The United States Department of Agricultures Natural Resources Conservation Service collects site-specific data on irrigation withdrawals in Tennessee. The U.S. Geological Survey collected industry withdrawal data for the 2000 water use compilation.

In 2000 total water ground-water withdrawals in Tennessee was approximately 417 Mgal/d. Ground-water withdrawals in the categories of public supply, self-supplied industrial, and irrigation are 385 Mgal/d, 92 per cent of total ground-water withdrawals. Withdrawals from the alluvial aquifers and the Other aquifer category totaled 2.48 Mgal/d, representing less than one per cent of ground water withdrawals from the three categories. Public Supply was the source of most of the withdrawals attributed to alluvial aquifers (2.40 Mgal/d out of a total of 2.43 Mgal/d). Irrigation was the major source of water assigned to the Other aquifer category (0.04Mgal/d out of a total of 0.05 Mgal/d).

Stream-valley aquifer withdrawals were disaggregated by the USGS Tennessee Water Science Center from alluvial aquifer category withdrawals. Public supply facilities provided well log and location information that made it possible to identify wells pumping from alluvial deposits that are in hydraulic connection with an adjacent watercourse (John K. Carmichael, oral communication).

Along the western border of Tennessee alluvial deposits comprise the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. Although not shown in the Ground Water Atlas of the United States, additional alluvial deposits of Holocene age are found in Hardin County along the Tennessee-Alabama border (John K. Carmichael, oral communication,). In Hardin County, total withdrawals of 2.30 Mgal/d were assigned to the Tennessee stream-valley aquifer, all of which were attributed to public supply. Alluvial aquifer withdrawals in Tennessee that could not be disaggregated totaled 0.13 Mgal/d, 0.1 Mgal/d attributed to public supply and 0.03 Mgal/d attributed to irrigation. All of the 0.05 Mgal/d of withdrawals assigned to the Other aquifer had the Knox Formation as the source of water.
